We have just launched a new bag for Ashbourne.

The bag was launched by the national director or the Fairtrade Foundation, Harriet Lamb, and Ashbourne’s Mayor, Councillor Steve Bull, at an event last week.

The bag features Ashbourne’s famous Shrovetide football and the spire of St Oswald’s Church.

The bag is made from Fairtrade Certified Cotton, which means that the cotton growers in India get a fair price for their work, as well as the Fairtrade premium to invest in community projects.

Harriet Lamb, said, "I am so pleased to launch the new Ashbourne shopping bag, which is made with Fairtrade cotton. It will help increase sales for the farmers, while also raising awareness of Fairtrade and advertising Ashbourne."

The launch was held at a Derbyshire Dales Fairtrade event, attended by campaigners and councillors from Fairtrade Towns in Ashbourne, Wirksworth, Matlock, Darley Dale and Buxton.

Harriet continued "It was so inspiring to hear all about the Fairtrade activities in Derbyshire - and the passion to do more from schools to faith groups - and all backed by the Mayors and councillors. I encourage everyone in Ashbourne to get a bag and enjoy filling it with Fairtrade tea and coffee, bananas and sugar!"

Councillor Steve Bull, who attended the event in his capacity as Mayor of Ashbourne, was thrilled to be presented with one of new bags. "I’m really pleased to support Fairtrade. I know that it's making a huge difference to producers and growers around the world. And of course, this bag is also a way of showing pride in our town and in our wonderful game of Shrovetide football."

The bag is priced £2.50 and is available from Natural Choice, Sticky Fingers, Cheddar Gorge, Gallery Café and Flower Café.
